"Mr. and Mrs. Smack" by Eat

One from the heavier side.  A good friend of mine, loaned me the "Sell Me A God" CD by Eat because he really liked it, he said they were so tight.  I fell in love with many songs on the CD.  Little did I know that when I returned the CD, it would be the last time I would see John.  He passed away shortly after that.  That was over 20 years ago, but I still think about him whenever I hear any of the music he turned me on to.

My first choice for the song today was a song called "Red Moon" but I could not find it on YouTube, so this is a good second choice.

"Wedding Vows In Vegas" by Was (Not Was)

Before I get into the E's I had to post this song.  I just love this song, the lyrics and the horn is just wonderful.

"But wedding vows in Vegas aren't meant to last for ages
You have to be courageous to play the odds that love will win
Whatever city you are in."

"Now You're Not Here" by Swing Out Sister

Updated January 30th, 2012: the original link to YouTube was dead, I have updated it.  This one has a fun little clip at the beginning as a bonus :)

I had trouble finding a Swing Out Sister song today.  My first pick was a newer (2009) song from the Les Etrangers soundtrack (Goodbye Miss Swift), but I couldn't find it on YouTube.  Then I thought about Masquerade from the 2nd album, but I could only find the instrumental version.  I saw this song had an official video, which I had never seen it before, so I watched it and enjoyed it a lot.  I decided it would be my pick for today.

"Budapest by Blimp" by Thomas Dolby

You know by now that I just love songs that set this kind of mood and such great imagery.

"Old Judge Jones" by Les Dudek

On the last night of my music class in college, the instructor had all of the students bring in a record of their choice to play for the class.  Someone brought in a Les Dudek album and played this song.  I've loved this song ever since.

"Slide" by Dido

Well I guess it had to happen sooner or later, I completely forgot to post a song yesterday.  :(   So this is my song for the 25th and it is kind of appropriate.  As one of the commenters said: "Such an awesome song".

"It's all right to make mistakes, you're only human."

"Artificial Flowers" by Bobby Darin

I was going to do a Fats Domino song today, but I couldn't find it on YouTube, so I'm going to leave it until later.  But here is a wonderful song that I used to play over and over on a 45 RPM single.

"Tangerine" by The Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra

Rachel Update 4-Feb-2017: I recently discovered that the version of this song that I remember and really like is by both the Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.  So I've added links to a couple of versions by them.

I like that it shows the 78 RPM being recorded with the Audacity audio editor which is what I use.

Sherman set the Wayback Machine for 1942, because we are going to check out one of my really old favorites.  I enjoyed all of these videos, so I posted all three.  The first two are both from the movie "The Fleet's In" and the third is from a Decca recording.

Well I prepared this blog post yesterday and apparently forgot to click on "Publish Post".  So this is my posting from the 22nd.

This song came on my Wife's iPod a couple of days ago, so it was fresh in my mind today.  I just love the groove on this song and the lyrics as usual.

"Downtown" by Lloyd Cole

The first time I noticed this song I had worked late, it was around 3 A.M., and I was driving through downtown on my way home.  The streets were all deserted and this song came on the radio.  It was just so perfect.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pQFJiU45Lk

And it turned out I loved the entire album.  I could not find studio versions of all of the songs so many of these are live, but still good.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find some of them at all.  If you like these, you should buy the album!

"Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins

This is a wonderful song, I have listened to it over and over.   This is the first time I have seen the video and I enjoyed it too (enjoyed it 4 times this morning).  And if you are in a position to help, please donate to your local shelter or food bank.  "Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in paradise."

"Scene of a Perfect Crime" by Concrete Blonde

This song is pure genius:

Whatever became of our sweet blind love
As long as we could be together it was more than enough
Now we're all grown up and we need so much
And you know the price will go up as such

That was another world then
That was another time
You can never go back to the place where love is blind
You can never go back to the scene of a perfect crime

"Living In The Plastic Age" by The Buggles

Another great song from the 80's.  I should say another great album from the 80's!  I think "Video Killed the Radio Star" is worn out from too much air play, but I love this album.

"What A Shame" by Patricia Barber

Here's a track from an album (Cafe Blue) well known among Audiophiles.  I thought it was funny how many videos there were on YouTube demonstrating various high-end audio equipment using this album.

Anyway, I love this smoky jazz cafe sound.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBEyrMrf70U

P.S. I always thought the CD I bought years ago sounded really harsh when she hits that high note.  Hopefully it has been remastered since then.  I heard the vinyl once and it sounded great.  I also have enjoyed the SACD of this album.

"Downtown Lights" by The Blue Nile

It's the one month anniversary for this blog today and I have a great song to celebrate.  I rank this song right up there with "Taxi Town" and "After Hours", it just puts me in that mellow kind of mood.  Just wonderful!  And, even better,  it appears there are a couple of different videos for this song:

"That's the Stuff You Gotta Watch" by Mose Allison

Rachel update 16-May-2017:  I found a "Best of Mose Allison" playlist on YouTube and it has this song included:

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1abdjPLI8M

Original Post:

I have a story to go with this song: my grandfather was friends with Cliff Peterson who owned the Hi-Fi Shop in Ogden, Utah in the '60s and started the first FM station (KBOC) in Ogden.  He gave my grandfather a Reel-to-Reel tape with hours of music on it.  (If I remember correctly it was one of those very thin, 3,600 foot tapes that could record 3 hours on each side at 3-3/4 in/sec.)

That tape contained this song but I had no idea who the artist was.  Finally, in the 80's I took a Cassette Tape with the song on it to one of the DJ's at the The University of Utah's KUER radio station and he was able to tell me that it was Mose Allison.  I bought a Best of Mose Allison CD and now love many of the songs on that CD.  Mose Allison will likely be making more appearances on this list.

YouTube: Unfortunately I cannot find a version of this song by Mose Allison on YouTube.  I will see if I can make one myself, but until then there is a fun version of this song from a 78 RPM record below.  Also if you click on the "Best of Mose Allison" link above it will take you to Amazon where you can hear a short sample of the song.

Alternate version by Buddy & Ella Johnson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kWfhrMeXBI

Note: there is a brief mention of Cliff Peterson, The Hi-Fi Shop, and KBOC on this web page: http://www.audiocircuit.com/DIY/Solid-State-Amplifiers/Material:Solid-State-Amplifier-Kits/Alaskan-Audio

"Come A Long Way" by Michelle Shocked

I didn't realize I had so many songs from artists that start with "A".  I was having trouble deciding on one today.  Then I ran across this song and remembered how much I enjoyed it.
