"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" by Nancy Wilson

Just love this song, I also enjoy the Henry Mancini version but I couldn't find it on YouTube.  The Diana Krall one is kinda fun too, so I included that one too.

Caught part of American Masters Troubadours on PBS tonight and they played this song.  It reminded me of how much I enjoy it, so it is my song today.

"Carol of the Bells" by Everybody

Last week I thought I would try to do the Twelve Days of Christmas Music, but I started counting the Christmas songs that I really count as favorites and off the top of my head I couldn't think of twelve Christmas songs that really fit my criteria...   Well, here's a weird thing, I could do it if I counted all the different versions of "Carol of the Bells" that I love.

I don't know why this particular song appeals to me so much.  It is interesting how much variety you can get in one song.  (Which reminds me of a really fun CD I found in the Cut-Out Bin: "Stairways to Heaven" where artists did "Stairway to Heaven" in different styles.)  Anyway, I couldn't find any of the versions I was originally going to post, but I did find a bunch of fun ones.  You really must check out The Muppets one, I love the Muppets and I was really LOL at the end.

"Old Days" by Chicago

This post was originally placeholder and I updated it on 1-Feb-2012.

There are some really good songs on Chicago VII, but I was debating whether any of them qualified as songs I would play over and over.  Then I noticed on Chicago VIII that there was a song there was no doubt about my listening to it over and over.  Since this is the last placeholder post in this "Chicago Week", I decided to skip Chicago VII and go for this song from Chicago VIII.

"A Hit By Varese" by Chicago

This was originally a placeholder, I replaced it on 1-Feb-2012.

I'm skipping over the Chicago IV album because it was a live album.  Once again I had a terrible time picking a track from Chicago V.  There were several great songs on that album to pick from.  I picked this one because it musically interesting and I love the line about "I'm so tired of oldies and moldies and goldies that I want to cry".  I was commenting the other day, after that line played, that it was weird to think that song is now almost 40 years old.

This post was originally a placeholder and I replaced it on 1-Feb-2012.

I had a terrible time picking a song from Chicago III, it has always been one of my favorite albums.  I finally narrowed it down to two songs and this one seemed a little more interesting musically.

"25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago

This was originally a placeholder and I replaced it on 1-Feb-2012.

Continuing the Chicago week I've decided to post a favorite song from a different album each day.  This is my favorite song from Chicago II.  Yesterday I mentioned how cool I thought it was to have a song introducing the band.  I think it is also very cool that this song is about writing the song itself.

"Introduction" by Chicago

This was originally a placeholder and I replaced it on 1-Feb-2012.

I've decided, since I haven't posted any songs by Chicago and I love so many of their songs, to make this a Chicago week.  And what better to start with than an introduction!  I have always thought it was such a cool idea to have a song introducing yourselves.  This is the first song from their first album (Chicago Transit Authority).

Rachel  update 26-Dec-2018:  fixed time stamp on this post and added the photos above.  These were taken 10 years ago today on Dec. 10, 2001, I believe at the old Utah Noodle Parlor.

Here I picked out a song for yesterday (Saturday, December 10, 2011) and then I forgot to post it.  And to further complicate it, I can't find this particular version on YouTube.  I'm talking about the singer Oliver, of "Good Morning Sunshine" and "Jean" fame.  I did find this interesting version from  Nancy Sinatra, so until I can find the version by Oliver...

"Under Ice" by Kate Bush

Updated March 19th, 2012:

I decided that although I love "It's Now Winter's Day" by Tommy Roe, it is not a song that I would play over and over.  In other words it is not what I would rate as a "10", it is a "9".   Fortunately, I played this Kate Bush song in my show on KCQN Utah a couple of weeks ago, and it fits perfectly in with the "Icy" songs I was posting around the end of November last year.  It is also definitely one of my favorite songs.  There are many videos using this song on YouTube.  I picked a few that were interesting.  Do a search on YouTube for a plethora of others.

"World" by New Order

Rachel update 25-Mar-2017: for the second time this morning I've been greeted with this: "This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds. | Sorry about that." when I clicked on a link.

Sigh!

So here is a video officially posted by Rhino that will hopefully work  :)

YouTube (Official): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXzs47qy2Pk

I was watching this video again (I really like the video for this song) and noticed that the woman that turns and enters the hotel is wearing a hat similar to my "go to" hat.  SueZQ calls it my "ladies who wear hats" hat.

I like many of the older New Order tracks, but for some reason I fell in love with the entire "Republic" album.  Listening to these tracks tonight I am reminded that it is a masterpiece.  I love every song on this album, but if I have to pick one I guess it would be "World":

"Hello It's Me" by Nazz

Some people may not know it, but this is the original version of this song by Todd Rundgren's band Nazz, from around 1968.  I've always like this version better than the uptempo remake.  This song still reminds me of high school and one of my girlfriends.  The two versions sound basically the same, the description and comments are different.

"Now Is The Time (For Love)" by Missing Persons

A friend took me to this damaged merchandise store and they had a bunch of CDs  and cassettes for something like 79 cents.  I bought a whole box of different cassettes, but Rhyme and Reason is the one that stood out.  I kept it in my car and played it all the time.  Loved the entire album.  I think I later bought the record, and the CD when it was finally released years later.  I had a terrible time picking just one song as the title for this post.  This one jumped out while I was listening to the videos, so I picked it, but they are all wonderful.

I know some people scoff at Barry Manilow, but I really enjoy some of his work.  I think this is a great song and very appropriate for this season.

I was going to post both the Leon Russell and the Carpenters version of this song, but I listened to a couple of the Leon Russell videos on YouTube and they sounded different than I remember.  Maybe the single was different than the album version or my memory is faulty.  I may have to try to find the 45, but for now, here is the Carpenters version:

Rachel update 25-Oct-2017: adjusted the date so that it appears on the correct date now.

Damn, I completely spaced posting this last night.  So this is my track for October 21st.

I remember sometime in the '90s they turned an old power station near the Cottonwood Mall into a dance club.  I went there early one night and there were only a handful of people there.  I remember they played this song and one guy got up and danced.  Such a great song.

I also wanted to note that I went on a trip to Yellowstone with Cuzzin Brad and Chet back when they were still at X96.  Of course we all worked on KCQN and now they are at 103.1 The Wave.

Anyway, when were on the road to and from West Yellowstone I had a mix CD with me that had this song on it and we loved it so much we played it over and over.

I had a terrible time picking just one Billy Joel song for today.  I really wanted to do "New York State of Mind", but I decided to save it in case I want to do a New York or City themed week.  Pressure is one of those songs that I've played over and over, so I'm going to choose it.  Plus it has a fun video.

"Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull

Rachel  update 14-Jul-2017: the old link is dead.  I have added a new one.

And I wanted to add a note that I remember listening to this album with my high school friend Wade Edge.  I remember one day at school he had gotten a '55 Chevy, we went out so he could take me for a ride and it was parked in front of the school.

When I went into Bonneville High last year (2016), to have them change my name, I parked in that same area and it reminded me about getting in that '55 Chevy and riding around in it.

I like the way this song starts off quiet and slow and builds and builds...

"Equality" by Howard Jones

I was sitting in my car late one night waiting for some friends to meet me at Bill and Nada's Cafe.  I think I was listening to the original KJQ and this song came on.  I was, like, Wow, I love this song!  But I couldn't remember the name of it.  So I had to sit in my car through the entire set until the announcer finally came on.  Anyway, this song and "Wanders to You" are tied for my favorite Howard Jones song.

"In The Time of Our Lives" by Iron Butterfly

When I was a kid, my friend Nick and I road our Stingray bicycles all the way from South Ogden to North Ogden to a record store that was going out of business.  One of the albums I bought was Iron Butterfly's "Ball".  None of the albums had outer sleeves and I later found out that the record store was ripping off the record companies.   They had returned the outer sleeves for a refund, told the record companies they had destroyed the records, and then sold them without sleeves.

The only song on this album that I had heard on the radio was "Soul Experience", which I thought was a great song.  But it turned out this entire album was a winner.  I in fact couldn't decide which song to use as my title for this post.

"Two Worlds Collide" by Inspiral Carpets

Rachel  Update 12-Dec-2016: I originally wrote this on October 8th, but I'm modifying the date so it appears on the correct day for this song.

Well damn!  I was frustrated with several things last night and decided to just go to bed, forgetting completely to post this song.  Sometimes it gets very frustrating when you can't hit the right keys on the keyboard, like ten times in a row.  And then there is Qwest, now Century Link, who still can't get things right.  There is no question, that over the years, I've had to call them with problems more than any other company.  But I've strayed way off topic...

Anyway, this is my song for October 7th.  It came on KCQN-Utah the other day and I was, like, oh yeah this is a great song.  And it asks a great question: "What have I done with my life?".  I know I've spent way too much of mine on the phone arguing with Qwest!  But I digress again :)

"On The Stairs" by Nicky Holland

I was in Florida on business, driving around one night listening to the radio and they played "Coloring Blue" by Nicky Holland.  I made a note of it and bought the CD when I returned home.  It became one of my all time favorite albums.  It is also interesting that Lloyd Cole is on one of the tracks.  Unfortunately I could not find all of the tracks on YouTube.

Rachel Update 11-Dec-2016: even more unfortunate, now two of the tracks I had from 5 years ago are no longer available.  One of which was today's song.  :(   I have moved them to the end.

"The Last Waltz" by Engelbert Humperdinck

Rachel Update 4-Dec-2016: I originally wrote this post on 30-Sep-2011, but since it was intended for the 29th I modified the post date.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Damn, I was so tired last night (insomnia the night before) I completely forgot to post yesterday's song.  So this is actually my song for Sept. 29th.

I can't remember for sure, but I think I first heard this song on a reel-to-reel tape that one of the other AVA (Audio-Visual Aide) guys recorded from the KVOG radio station in Ogden.  Everyone in the AVA just loved that tape, we played it all the time.  I will likely be posting some other songs from that tape in the future.

"We'll Sing In The Sunshine" by Gale Garnett

I remember playing this on the jukebox in a little diner that my family used to eat at on Riverdale Road in Ogden.  I can't remember the name of it, but the owner later closed it and started Warren's Drive In.  Anyway, I still love this song.

"Something Out Of This World" by Swing Out Sister

First, I would like to send a big Happy Birthday wish to Corinne Drewery today!!

If I had been thinking I would have waited and posted my Swing Out Sister song of the week today instead of Monday.  So, now, I guess we will have two SOS songs this week.  :)

I went to their concert at Bimbo's 365 Club in 1997 and while they were performing this song I remember thinking how Swing Out Sister was "something out of this world, something wonderful".

"As Heaven Is Wide" by Garbage

Starting off the G's with a great rocker from the 90's.  I couldn't decide which video I liked the best so I linked to a couple.

"Boys and Girls Together" by Chase

I just love horns and Bill Chase really delivered.  I was saddened when I went to YouTube to search  and found that he had passed away in 1974 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Chase).  This entire album is a masterpiece, last week I played the entire album over and over.  It was difficult to pick one song as the title for this post.

Update 10-Feb-2012: change the artist in the title from Bill Chase to Chase which was the band's name.

"Back To The Wall" by Divinyls

I wasn't feeling well yesterday and went to bed early, completely forgetting to post a song :(

But this is a really great song by the Divinyls to make up for it.

"You've got the upper hand
But I've got nothing to lose
When I'm trapped in a corner like this
I might light the fuse"

"Heartbeat City" by The Cars

I missed this one when I was doing the C's and decided I needed to take care of it now.  Easily my favorite Cars song.  One funny thing to note is that I have a copy of the "Heartbeat City" LP where the title of this song is "Jackie" instead of "Heartbeat City".

"Taste the Pain" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

I had an infected tooth pulled today and it did NOT want to cooperate and refused to come out.  It was unbelievable how much it hurt coming out and how much it hurt afterwards.  I had two shots of anesthetic before, another during,  and two big ones afterwards for the trip home.  And even then I thought I was going to go insane from the pain on the ride home.

But this reminded me of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers song, so I decided that will be my song of the day.  Such a great song and great video too.  "Walk away and taste the pain, come again some other day."

"Seconds" by U2

Update 23-Dec-2015:

Since this was the tenth anniversary of 9-11 I originally tried to think of a song to commemorate all those who lost their lives and those who gave their lives afterwards, but nothing I thought of really seemed appropriate.  I finally decided to just have a moment of silence.

But while trying to think of a song for the tragedy in Paris this song came to mind, but I decided to use it to fill in this day.  It is so very sad that the hate and violence has continued.

"Hold On" by Santana

This song playing on a memory stick in my car on 28-May-2017

A peek into almost 6 years into the future.

Rachel update 12-May-2018: added above photos I took last year of this song playing on my car stereo from a memory stick.

Original post:

I'm going to interrupt the F's for a special song.  My wife picked this great, great song for our anniversary:

Don't rush me, just this once
I want to make this moment last
Slow down the pace, there's no hurry
...
Just let me close my eyes, memorize
The way things are this minute
So when you're gone, I can go on
If memory can hold within it what I'm feeling
Should time try fading or stealing something away

Hold on, nothing's the same
Tell me why I feel this way
Life wouldn't be worth living without You!

"Shape of Things to Come" by Max Frost and the Troopers

I'm not sure if I remember this song from 1968, but I recently rediscovered it on the "Nuggets from Nuggets" CD.  I have often thought it would have made a good theme song for the Free Software movement.

"Let the old world make believe, it's blind and deaf and dumb. But nothing can change the shape of things to come."

"Knife Edge" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Another one this week from the heavier side.  This one from 1970, hard to believe it was 41 years ago.  I loved seeing the old Tektronix 500 series oscilloscope in the live version.

"Cross My Heart" by Everything But The Girl

It was almost impossible to pick just one EBTG song.  I'm definitely going to post two or three of their albums.  But for now here is a song that I have played over and over.  It reminds me of someone in my past, but that is kind of appropriate.

"Falling to Pieces" by Faith No More

Updated 1-Feb-2012:

I was reviewing my blog and decided that although "Rock On" is a great song, it wasn't one that I would play over and over and over.  And a few days ago I heard "Falling to Pieces" on KCQN Utah and was reminded of what an incredible song it was.  In fact, I considered it to be my "Theme Song" for most of the 90's.  I think it has some of the best lyrics ever, that pretty much described me to a tee: "droplets of yes and no in an ocean of maybe".   And it is one of those rockers I still have to crank up to 11.  And the video is great too, I could watch it over and over again.  So I'm changing my song for September 1, 2011 to it.  Enjoy!

Update 30-Sep-2015: I changed the broken link to the official Rhino video for this song.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smack" by Eat

One from the heavier side.  A good friend of mine, loaned me the "Sell Me A God" CD by Eat because he really liked it, he said they were so tight.  I fell in love with many songs on the CD.  Little did I know that when I returned the CD, it would be the last time I would see John.  He passed away shortly after that.  That was over 20 years ago, but I still think about him whenever I hear any of the music he turned me on to.

My first choice for the song today was a song called "Red Moon" but I could not find it on YouTube, so this is a good second choice.

"Wedding Vows In Vegas" by Was (Not Was)

Before I get into the E's I had to post this song.  I just love this song, the lyrics and the horn is just wonderful.

"But wedding vows in Vegas aren't meant to last for ages
You have to be courageous to play the odds that love will win
Whatever city you are in."

"Now You're Not Here" by Swing Out Sister

Updated January 30th, 2012: the original link to YouTube was dead, I have updated it.  This one has a fun little clip at the beginning as a bonus :)

I had trouble finding a Swing Out Sister song today.  My first pick was a newer (2009) song from the Les Etrangers soundtrack (Goodbye Miss Swift), but I couldn't find it on YouTube.  Then I thought about Masquerade from the 2nd album, but I could only find the instrumental version.  I saw this song had an official video, which I had never seen it before, so I watched it and enjoyed it a lot.  I decided it would be my pick for today.
