"Get Out of London" by Intaferon

On the record they took the spaces out of the title so it was GETOUTOFLONDON.  This is one of Stacee's Top 5 Favorites on KCQN Utah today and it reminded me that this song is one of my top favorites.

Bonus track: not a top favorite of mine, but a song I really like is "Steamhammer Sam" also by Intaferon:

"Christmas Song" by the Chipmunks

I think this might have been the song I was thinking of posting on Christmas and then forgot.  My memory just sucks and it seems worse lately.  I did one of the most annoying things yet: I was playing a record on Christmas and forgot to stop it when it was over.  Discovered today it was still tracking in the inner (or run-out) groove.  It appeared to have actually worn out the inner groove as there were flakes of vinyl all around the inner groove (see photo below).

"A Christmas Song" by Jethro Tull

Always thought this was a fun Christmas song.  I had no idea that Jethro Tull came out with a Christmas album a few years ago.  It has a longer version of this song.  The original version is from the Living in the Past album.

"Merry Christmas, Darling" by Carpenters

I've decided there will always be a soft spot in my heart for this song.  I still remember when it was first released, how exciting it was to have a "new" Christmas song.

"Christmas is Coming" by The Three Courgettes

I wanted to post this song last year but couldn't find it to YouTube.  Part of the problem was the artist's name was spelled wrong in KCQN Utah's database.  When I found it on this A Christmas Record I corrected the error, but I still couldn't find it on YouTube.  However I did find an MP3 of it on this http://hipchristmasmusic.com/ site.

"The Christmas Song" by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66

I enjoy this song by many different artists, but this version from the famous "Something Festive" A&M sampler album is one of my favorites.  That album, released in 1968, has remained one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time.

"Holding Back The Years" by Simply Red

Here it is 12/12/12!  It's the last time I will ever see a date with all three numbers the same.  That has been fun every year for the past twelve years.  In 2007 I even captured a screenshot at 07:07:07 (see below).

But that started me thinking about how fast the years go by, which led me to choosing this song for today.

"The Crying Scene" by Aztec Camera

Doing some cleanup at KCQN Utah this morning and happened across this song and remembered what a great song it is.

You only get one hit
That's the beauty of it
What's the good in cryin'

It's always been that way
At the end of the day
You gotta keep on tryin'

Life's a one take movie
And I don't care what it means
I'm saving up my tears

"Smoke From a Distant Fire" by Sanford and Townsend

I think I've been wearing this record out just trying to record it.  I set up an old PowerMac to record some vinyl, but it has turned into some grief.  I wanted to record them with 24-bits at 192 KHz, but then I was getting buffer underruns.  Tried recording with real-time priority but then the dammed thing crashed.  I'm wondering if this machine having hardware issues because of it's age.

It is funny how you can get to something indirectly.  I was looking up a Paul Westerberg song for KCQN Utah and it mentioned that he had written a eulogy for Alex Chilton that appeared in the New York Times.  So I took a peek at the Alex Chilton page and that led me to The Box Tops.  Which in turn reminded me of this, my favorite Box Tops song.

"Don't Sleep in the Subway" by Petula Clark

Interesting it shows a SACD (Super Audio CD) in the video.  I was disappointed to read that tests they ran, people couldn't tell the difference.  Technically, it is clearly superior and as this http://www.korg.com/services/products/mr/Future_Proof_Recording_Explained.pdf document explains, a much better archival format than PCM.

"Can't Stop Killing You" by Kirsty MacColl

A great song and video from the late Kirsty MacColl

Rachel Update 13-Aug-2016: It turns out the original link to this video on YouTube has been blocked.  I'm adding some more links that are currently working.

I also want to comment on how this song and video depict the fear that far too many women experience far too often.  I got a taste of that on 5-Oct-2016 when some guy pulled up next to me and wanted me to get in his car.  He didn't want to take no for an answer.  After he pulled away, I got in my car and he must have been lurking because when I pulled out of the parking lot he started chasing me.  I wrote a little about in my blog on 6-Oct-2015.

"Ironbound" by Suzanne Vega

Love the imagery in this song, but it fades into "Fancy Poultry" which is just okay.  I have edited the song for myself so it is just "Ironbound".  Unfortunately I don't see a video of the original on YouTube that is just "Ironbound" (you can stop it about 3:36 for just Ironbound.

"I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" by Aretha Franklin & George Michael

I had no idea that it was George Michael on this record with Aretha Franklin.

The video with photos has a photo of a Revox Reel-to-Reel tape recorder which I had completely forgotten about.  Revox was considered a very high quality tape recorder.

"Hello" by Poe

This is so weird, I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that I had already posted this song.  But I can't find it, so I must be mistaken.  This is one of those songs that is just perfect for me.  Many of my very favorite songs are kind of eerie and mysterious and this song certainly qualifies.  Then "you left a trace on a data back road that I almost erased" is just so intriguing.

Happy birthday to Chad.  Led Zeppelin always reminds me of Chad.  I've debated whether this song was too overplayed to be on my favorites list, but I've decided I still love hearing it.

"Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes" by Jimmy Buffett

So many great lines in this song:

"All of the faces and all of the places, Wonderin' where they all disappeared"
"Good times and riches and son-of-a-bitches, I've seen more than I can recall"
"Reading departure signs in some big airport, reminds me of the places I've been"

And most importantly:

"If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane"

Another favorite of the eighties!  Weird, another song I remember listening to while working on a car.  I was fixing something on the transmission of my Monte Carlo in the parking lot at Unisys.  It was funny that for years you could see the trail of transmission fluid from Redwood Road to the Unisys parking lot.

"Big Iron" by Marty Robbins

I know this seems like a very weird song to have on someones "Records 2 Die 4" list, but for some reason I just love this song.  This song also always reminds me of Randy U., one of my best friends in High School.  If I remember correctly he was recording a bunch of Marty Robbins onto 8-track tape cartridges for someone.  That was always a bitch trying to get the songs to fit on the track so there wasn't a huge silence until the track change.

"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by The Beatles

I have a weird association for this song.  For a while after (high) school I worked at Weber State College running the VTR (Video Tape Recorder), taping student teachers presentations.  (It was a Sony VTR that recorded on1/2 inch tape, possibly something like the one pictured here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIAJ-1)  The first time I remember taking notice of this song was during a break, we were discussed the Abbey Road album and this song.

A non-hit from the "This Diamond Ring" album, but a favorite of mine.  I believe this is the first album that I ever bought with my own money.  I still remember buying it at Wangsgards on 2nd Street in Ogden.  We often drove to Wangsgards for Sunday dinner at their lunch counter.  And I tested many tubes in their tube tester.

"Sax and Violins" by Talking Heads

SueZQ was watching Weeds this morning and when I walked in somebody said something that reminded me of a line in this song ("Mom and Pop...").  This is one of my favorite Talking Head songs so I thought I would post it today.  I always loved the line "If you're looking for trouble, that's what you will find".

"Maybelline" by Johnny Rivers

One of the early Johnny Rivers songs that was recorded live.  I still remember my Mom listening to this album at the house on 7th Street in Ogden.  Weird to think that was over a half a century ago.

"Look to Your Soul" by Johnny Rivers

This is a more recent Johnny Rivers discovery, I wasn't aware of this song until the 2-CD greatest hits set.  But it has become one of my favorites.

"Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers

There are many songs that have a very vivid relation to a certain moment in my past, and whenevr I hear them I am reminded of that moment.  This song is one such song, it reminds me of riding down Weber Canyon with Grandpa Gus and stopping at a restaurant to have lunch.  I remember playing this song on the jukebox.  I always thought it was so cool that it mentions Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band in the song.  I made so many trips down Weber Canyon with him, I can't remember if it was from a fishing trip to Henifer, Utah or a work trip to Rock Springs, Wyoming.  It seems like it was a trip home from Wyoming.

"Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers

I loved the T.V. series Secret Agent Man (actually a British T.V. series titled Danger Man, see yesterday's post) and I've always loved the theme song from it.

"The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove" by Dead Can Dance

I absolutely love this song.  We were watching a DVD of the 1960's Danger Man T.V. series (in the U.S. it aired under the name Secret Agent Man).  There was an episode of it with the same title as this song.  I have no idea if this is a coincidence or if somehow Dead Can Dance used the title from the T.V. series.  Oh, the DVD was damaged and "The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove" episode would not play so we were unable to watch it.

"Do You Know What I Mean?" by Lee Michaels

I originally posted "Running On Empty" by Jackson Browne for today's post.  However I later discovered that was a duplication of my post for 30-Dec-2011.  So I copied my original post for today to the first post and replaced it with this song.

Loved the part of this video with the 55 Chevy.
