"The Fever" by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes

This is another song that John Byer turned me on to.  I felt bad because I forgot this one when I did my tribute show earlier this month.

"White Night" by Torch Song

I think I first heard this song in Mad Platter Records when it was on 21st South in Sugar House.  I had to buy it on the spot.

"Vision Thing" by Sisters of Mercy

For a complete change of pace...  I've had this song stuck in my head all morning (earworm) so I thought I had better post it.

"The Road to Hell" by Chris Rea

I'm starting to wonder if I will ever catch up after being in computer hell for several weeks.  I am cramming to pick some music to play for my show on KCQN Utah on Sunday, Earth Day.  I was reminded what a cool song this is and decided I had to post it it.

"Fresh Garbage" by Spirit

One of my favorite bands, they made some great albums in their short time together.  I remember my friend Randy bought this album at the Grand Central in Ogden.  (I'm pretty sure it was before it changed to Fred Meyer.)  He loaned it to me and it became one of my favorite albums of all time.  But when I went to buy a copy for myself it was out of print and it took me years to find a copy.

Anyway, this song is a good song for Earth Day.  I also remember this song won a battle of the songs contest on KCPX radio in Salt Lake City.

Original post:

Unfortunately, I could not find any sort of video for this song on YouTube.  It is one of my top favorite Spirit songs and sort of fits into the Earth Day theme.

Hear the trees crying
All the years dying
Fire had turned the hills into ashes
And as the sun ran down from the sky
Canyon burned
Canyon's burning
Canyon's burning down

"It Shall Be" by Spirit

This song is very sixties and the message is pretty simple, but it gives me a great feeling.  Love the flute too.

In the future soon
Beauty will find you
And all of mankind
Together binding you and me
It shall be

"This Wall" by Wendy Waldman

Rachel update 13-Jun-2017: the original link is dead and unfortunately I can't find this song anywhere on YouTube.

Original Post:

I cannot remember what radio station used to play this song, but it remains one of my favorites.

YouTube (dead): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSr8P-Bac_g

For some reason I remember listening to this on an old receiver I had by the work bench while working on carburetor or transmission or something.

Speaking of receivers I was thinking the other day that there is now a generation or two (or more?) who have never heard the sound that old radios, with analog tuning, made as you turned the dial through the stations.

And there probably aren't too many generations left that ever selected a TV station that way.  I rememeber we had an old Raytheon television that had an analog dial to select the station.  I think it was built in 1951 or 1952.  I'll have to see if I can find the Sam's Photofact for it.

I couldn't find a Wikipedia page for Sam's Photofact, but this page is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Rider

"You're My Favorite Waste of Time" by Marshall Crenshaw

I'm playing B-sides in my show tonight on KCQN Utah and this is my favorite.  It was the B-side to his big hit "Someday, Someway".

"Party Train" by Love Tractor

I first heard of Love Tractor from my late friend John Byer, I remeber he was telling us that two of the new bands he really liked were Love Tractor and Dumptruck, someone commented that instead of being into Heavy Metal he was into heavy machinery.

"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum

The teenage years are rough and this song always reminds me of that period in our family.  Fortunately ours had a happy ending, unfortunately there are too many that don't.

"You're Crazy for Taking the Bus" by Jonathan Richman

As you can see I am way behind.  I've been in computer hell for the last two weeks and now I am behind on everything.  I still need to fill in all the days between my last post and this one, but I wanted to make this post today about my show tonight.

Tonight in my show on KCQN Utah I'm doing a tribute to my friend John Byer, that passed away in 1991.  I'm going to play some of the music that he shared with me and music that reminds me of him.

One of the artists that he was always talking about was Jonathan Richman, but I never really found the time to follow up and check him out for myself until now.  I was looking at his videos on YouTube and came across this one.  It made me laugh and I love it.

John always said how Jonathan Richman was fearless and would get up in front of an audience and sing this sappy stuff without batting an eye.  When I saw this video it was exactly what John described.  I was really laughing out loud.

Since then I have been marvelling at how, 21 years after his passing, John still brought laughter and light into my life.

"Honky's Ladder" by The Afghan Whigs

Me (now Rachel) 6 years in the future
Rachel update 11-Feb-2019: added photo above and link to official video.

It's weird to think that in April of 2012, I had just barely started on the path to discovering that I was really a woman.  Within a month or so I would shave my legs which would be so incredible seeing and feeling I would go farther.  I had NO IDEA that 3 years later I would be living full time as a woman and find more happiness in life than I ever thought possible.

Explicit lyrics but for some reason I really like this one.

I can't believe that it's taken me this long to remember this one.  I was driving down 39th South one day and somebody in a Jeep with the top off had this song blasting on their stereo.  I had to keep following it until this song was over I love this song so much.

"Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers

I remember when this song was popular some DJ spliced it up so that the "I know, I know, I know..." part went on for several minutes.  Yeah that was annoying, but the original version has remained one of my favorites.
