"Long Goodbye" by Thompson Twins

I know I'm taking the easy way out again, but trying to keep up with everything is hard :(

So to keep things simple, I heard this on KCQN Utah today, really enjoyed hearing it and decided it would be my song for today.

"Now You're Not Here (Daddy Macks Back)" by Swing Out Sister

I had to update my post for August 29th, 2011 today because the link was broken.  The song for that day was "Now You're Not Here" the regular version.  But that reminded me about a great version of that song from "The Big Elsewhere" CD.  If I had just heard this song playing somewhere I doubt that I would have recognized what song it was, but it is so cool sounding, I just love it.

"Heartland" by The The

I heard this song on KCQN Utah and it reminded me I needed to post this song.  It is one of my favorite The The songs.  In fact now that I think about it, it is "The" favorite.  Pun intended.  :)

This is the first time I've seen the video and I really enjoyed the video too.

This is one of my favorite songs from my show on KCQN Utah a couple of weeks ago featuring The Connells.  Thanks again to Stacee for her help with the Connells songs for that show.

Rachel  update 26-Dec-2018:  added photos above.

Been a favorite since it came out in what 1988?  Hard to believe that was 24 years ago.

"Lust 'n' Love" by The Stray Cats

Me at photo shoot on 25-May-2019

Rachel update 26-July-2019: the original link is dead.  Added this one to the Stray Cats channel:

Original post:

This is my favorite Stray Cats song.  I just love the description of the corner of lust and love: "I can hear Chicago Blues from an out of tune guitar and a 1939 neon sign buzzing above the bar".

Interesting... in the live versions it's Texas Blues.

"The Big Hurt" by Toni Fisher

The songs from this week reminded me of a song from that era that has also remained a favorite all these years.  I do have the 45 of this song but I would have to find it.  This is funny I remember buying this 45.  I was in Woolworth's with my grandmother and there was a bin filled with 45's for something like 4 for $1.  This was one of the 45s I bought.  What I can't remember if that was before or after the Newgate Mall was built.

The 45 RPM video comments mention that it was the first record to use phasing effects.  I had heard this before.  The "Original" video says that the phasing was an accident when they "pushed the wrong button" but it sounded unique so they left it.

I decided to do one more old 45 for Saturday, January 21, 2012.  I have never noticed before that it was from a Broadway play "The Pajama Game".

I have not been able to find the Mariners version on YouTube, but the Patti Page version is pretty good.  And it was fun seeing the scene from the movie.

Another old 45!!  I'm amazed that I was 5 for 5 for these old 45's on YouTube.  Both these sound like the same version.  I thought maybe the black and white was a promo copy, but it doesn't say promo on it so I don't know.  There is some more info about Earl "Chip" Nelson in the comments for the black and white label video.

Update January 23, 2013:

Unfortunately all three of the videos I linked to on YouTube in the original post are no longer available.  Disappointing!  That is one of the bad things about the Internet, something that is there one day can easily be gone the next.  I have found another video on YouTube, but it is a different version.

Yet another old 45 for Wednesday, January 18, 2012.  Note: the 1976 LP version is the same as the 1957 45 I have.  The CD I have contains a more Disco version from the 70's.

I found some old 45's a year or so ago and was so happy that this one was among them, because I just love this song.  Then at a recent family dinner my brother asked about this record and if I still had it.  It was so funny that he would ask about that particular record when I had so recently found it.

Note: the first couple of videos I found on YouTube seemed to be playing at the wrong speed (too slow), but these two sound correct to me:

"Middle of the Road" by Pretenders

Rachel update 30-March-2020: Removed "The" from the band name, it's just "Pretenders" without a "The".

This is my song for Thursday, January 12th, 2012.  This is my favorite Pretenders song, it has so many great lines in it, like "As long as you don't try dragging my bay or dropping a bomb on my street" and "I can't get from the cab to the curb without some little jerk on my back".

Note: this post was updated Sunday, January 15th, 2012, after I heard this song on KCQN Utah.
