"It Was a Very Good Year" by The Brothers Four

A couple of days ago I wrote a blog post for today and scheduled it.  But I decided this morning I need to write a different blog for today.  I need to write a special post about what an amazing year 2014 was.  (I have moved the original post I made for today ahead to Jan 2nd.)

If you have been reading my blog in the past few months, you know I have mentioned that this year has been quite the roller coaster ride.  I have been debating whether it was possible that your best year ever and your worst year ever could be the same year?  But I have decided 2014 was the best year ever, there were just several very bad things that happened this year.

I feel like I am 100% better than I was one year ago...  in fact I will go so far as to say I am 200% or even 300% better than I was last year at this time.  While I certainly still have problems from the MS, I can say my memory is definitely better, my thinking is clearer, my hands are even better.  This morning I even trusted my right hand to carry a cup of hot coffee.

One of the things that I feel was major part of my improvement is loving myself and doing the best I can to take care of myself.  Even with MS I still feel amazing and wonderful.  And changing how I felt about myself, changed how I view the world.

The other major thing that helped me was all the support I got.  I was going to all the people who helped me, but the list is so long...  I will try to do that as soon as I have more time.  I forgot the rec center is closing early today and I haven't got my final jog for 2014 in yet....  gotta run (literally).

"War" by Edwin Starr

Here is a song that I have meant to to post for a long time.  Yesterday's post reminded me, so I thought I might as well do it now, lest I forget again.

"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon

Damn, I almost forgot I wanted to post this song.  Unfortunately war isn't over.  It would be so nice if the human race could stop hurting each other and learn to love and accept one another despite our differences.  I think one of the most wonderful things about the human race is it's diversity.

" Viva! (Viva Tirado)" by The 5th Dimension

I'm feeling better this morning, last night I think all of the stress and eating less than healthy caught up with me.

This is a great song that I had completely forgotten about.  It starts off Tape #25 of my "favorites" cassettes from the 70's (see my post from March 1st, 2013).  I loved hearing this song so much, I couldn't wait until I get to posting the songs from Tape #25 to post it.  (I'm currently only starting to post songs from Tape #7.)

"Little Altar Boy" by Carpenters

I'm not sure why I had a new found attraction to this song this year, I've played it many times.  Maybe it's just the beauty of Karen's voice.

"Snow" by Claudine Longet

Here is another great (obscure) song from the famous "Something Festive" A&M sampler album (I mentioned it in my post two years ago).  Yes we had a white Christmas this year and "all I see is snow" this morning.

"My Christmas Card To You" by The Partridge Family

This has always been a favorite, and really says what I would like to say to everyone.  I'm even looking out the window at the softly falling snow.  :)

To you and all your family, your neighbors and your friends
May all your days be happy with a joy that never ends
May peace and love surround you
at Christmas time and all the whole year through

May your life be filled with sunshine, may your every wish come true
May you find the sweet fulfillment in everything you do
May your days be blessed with the very very best
both now and the whole year through

"Rollercoster" by Everything But the Girl

As I mentioned in my post a couple of weeks ago, this year has been quite the roller coaster ride.  There have been days where I've felt better about myself, life, and the world around me.  And then some of the worst things ever have happened this year.  It is unbelievable how much grief getting robbed has caused, I'm still dealing with the fallout.

Anyway, the actual theme of this EBTG song is different of course, but I was thinking again this morning about what a roller coaster ride I have been on and it reminded me of this song.

"Illusion" by Boz Scaggs

I realized after I posted yesterday's Boz Scaggs song I have never posted my favorite Boz Scaggs song (this one).  Boz Scaggs has a ton of great songs, but I think this one tops my list.

What you gonna do when your dream falls through?
Run away, why don't you just run off and hide once again in your dammed illusion.

"Runnin' Blue" by Boz Scaggs

Rachel update 10-Feb-2017: I was walking/jogging/running again last night and was again enjoying this song on my MP3 player.  I couldn't remember if I had posted it, but I see I did.  Weird to think that I've been doing that for this long.  My knees were okay last night, but I've been having more trouble recently dragging my right foot.  Especially as I get tired.  :(

I fixed the title "Runnin'" instead of "Running" and added a few more links...

"A Big Red Kite" by Lobo

I was thinking this morning how utterly complex and stressful and fraught with danger the world is today.  Yesterday I uploaded that video for the mystery song from my cell phone to YouTube.  Later I looked and discovered my f'ing cell phone downloaded every freaking thing from this account to my cell phone.  NONE of which I wanted on my cell phone.  Argh!!!!  I so f'ing HATE it when devices do shit automatically, without ASKING me if that is what I want.  I want to be in control of what my devices do.

Please support GNU (http://www.gnu.org/) and the Free Software Foundation (http://www.fsf.org/) they may be the last hope for us to keep control of all of this digital junk.

Life seemed so much simpler 40 or 50 years ago.  I agree that a lot of things are better now, but so many things are so much more complicated.  Anyway, I was trying to think of a song about life being simpler then.  The only song that came to mind is this one and that really isn't what it is about, but it is a great song and so until I think of something better... let's go fly a big red kite.

"What the World Needs Now" by Steve and Eydie

I've decided that this is one of my favorite versions of "What the World Needs Now".  It was on an old reel-to-reel tape that I got from Cliff Peterson at the Hi-Fi Shop in Ogden as I described in this post back on 5-August-2011.

I unfortunately could not find this version on YouTube, and I have not been able to find the original reel-to-reel tape.  I copied the reel-to-reel tape to cassette tapes back in the seventies and I have made a video of playing this song from the cassette and will be putting it on YouTube as soon as I can reduce the resolution (I don't feel like uploading a 600 MB file to YouTube).

"Red Rubber Ball" by The Cyrkle

I've told many people that this year has been quite the roller coaster ride.  I was listening to this song the other day and thinking...  wishing... hoping "the roller coaster ride is nearly at an end".  Unfortunately this morning I'm not so sure.  :(

I think the worst effect of MS is how it made my brain function slower, that it sometimes takes hours or even days to logically think something through.  Therefore there are many, many more cases of "morning after" syndrome.   Like Jimmy Buffett described in my post last month.

"People" by The Tymes

Rachel  update 14-Mar-2017: added live TV video + link to my post on 13-Mar-2017 of Barbra Streisand's version.

I've decided I just love this version of this song from the "Rocks Greatest Hits" album (see last Tuesday's post).  I consider Barbra Streisand's version one of my favorites, but I have been rockin' to this version the last week.

This is a good song for today because family and friends coming over to help fix up the house.  Just a huge, huge thanks to everybody who has helped us and always help us!!!!  Love to all of you!!!!

"If You Don't Want My Love" by Robert John

I've played this side of the "Rocks Greatest Hits" album (see last Tuesday's post) about a dozen times in the last few days.  I just love this song.  I just love the "Now" <ahh> "now" <ahh> "you say we are through" thing.

"Slip Slidin' Away" by Paul Simon

I put the Paul Simon's Greatest Hits vinyl record on while I was working on the sink.  When I heard the first few bars of this song, I remembered how much I love this song.  And it was the absolute PERFECT song for today.  I was feeling like I was losing it all day.  I was definitely slip slidin' away.

"I'm Only Sleeping" by The Beatles

I wish more than anything I was only sleeping.  It is unbelievable how f'ing tired I am.  The Beatles what an f'ing mess of various versions.  Until the "Mono" box was released in 2009 I had no idea that the Beatles were only involved in the mixing of the mono versions and somebody else mixed the Stereo versions.  A few songs are noticeably different in the mono and stereo versions.  One song is a different length in mono and stereo.  Then of course the first several albums were completely different in the U.S. and U.K. and the US albums having some funky reverb added.  Sigh!

Anyway, here are a couple of different versions:

"You'd Be Surprised" by Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra

I woke up his morning with song stuck in my head, the version I like is the one from the "Dance Till Tomorrow" album shown in this video I made on YouTube.  I just love that album.  But I can't find that version on YouTube.

I had no idea the song was an Irving Berlin song dating back to 1919 and Eddie Cantor.  This version I found is kind of fun, I still like the Sammy Kaye version better.

I was playing my two favorite Sammy Kaye albums this morning.  It is so funny that I enjoy them so much, they are just so old.  This was one of my absolute favorites as a child.  Unfortunately, the version from the album I like is not the original 1946 version, so I can't find it on YouTube.

"On the Sunny Side of the Street" by Tommy Dorsey

I know this seems like a strange selection for the day after I was robbed and spent the entire day trying to get ahead of possible account problems, identity theft, etc.  But I decided that I can't let things like this drag me down.

This song has come up in a couple of different conversations in the past couple of weeks and it is such a great song.   This describes me perfectly: "Used to walk in the shade, with my blues on parade, what a drag oh man."

These two versions seemed a little different so I included both.

"Nice, Nice, Very Nice" by Ambrosia

Another interesting song by Ambrosia that sets to music a poem from Kurt Vonnegut's Cat Cradle.  Somebody broke into my car and stole my backpack this afternoon.  But I'm sure "we all fit together in the same machine".

Officer Bennett was very helpful and pointed out how tiny particles of glass were all over and could get blow around the car and get into your eyes.  So I went to a self service car wash and vacuumed the glass up as best I could.

Found this 45 in Randy's 50 cent bin and had to have it since it is my favorite Lesley Gore song.  I remember her doing this song on the Batman TV show as part of Catwoman's posse.  Catwoman, my favorite character, Julie Newmar was so, well, HOT!

"Pretty Ballerina" by the Left Banke

Having memory issues is so fun.  I've told people how stuff just disappears, I had it one minute and the next minute it is nowhere to be found.  And recently I've had a couple of cases of things magically appearing.  For example I went into the garage and there was a stack of 45s sitting there that, I swear, I've never seen before and have no idea where they came from.

Anyway, I would have sworn that I posted this song earlier, in the past week or so, but now it appears that isn't the case.

"Tragedy" by Argent

I would definitely count yesterday as one of my worst days ever.  It was just one bad thing after another.  I can't even talk about it and I can't decide what song to post for it, so for now I'm skipping yesterday.

Over 30 years ago I had a poster on the wall of my cubicle "Murphy's Computer Laws" and one of them was "Badness comes in waves" and it is so true.  Anyway this song came to mind this morning and I have had it stuck in my head ever since (earworm).

"Me and My Shadow" by The Mills Brothers

Album my Grandpa bought me when I was very sick as a kid

Note: I'm (Rachel) finishing this post almost 4 years in the future.

That morning I found my favorite cat ever dead behind our garage.  I believe I had never cried that much before in my life before.  And I cried for days afterwards.  I fear that being a black cat on Halloween was extremely bad luck for her and us.

In retrospect it may have been because I was self-medicating at that point.  I had been taking a phyto-estrogen most of that year, in an attempt to develop breasts.  I felt like I had developed small breasts at that point.  I suspect that the estrogen had given me more emotions as well.

Anyway, I still miss our Shadow to this day.  She was so tiny, but just so fierce.  She was obviously a tiny cat, but when you picked her up you realized she was all fur.  But the way she used to get up on the back of the chairs like she was the Queen of the House.

She was so fierce she would go after Grizzly our huge male cat in this blitz attack.  (Grizzly is so big I have to use bothn hands to pick him up.)  It was so funny!

I'm crying again now, I miss her so much...

Anyway, Sue used to sing this sing to shadow.  And the Mills Brothers album ("MMMM... The Mills Brothers") that has this song also has a special memory for me.  When I was young I had been very sick for a significant amount of time and so one night my grandpa took me down to Gibson's, just a block away on 36th Street, and bought me that album.

I've been sick like that again this year (2018) and been pretty sick for most of the last 5 months.

"Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett

I remember my cubicle neighbor when I first started working at E&S (I pretty sure her name was Pam) had a list of the rules of life (I wish I had a copy of them).  I do remember that one of the rules was that you get to repeat each lesson over and over again until you learn it.

I have repeated this lesson (if I eat a bunch of junk food and drink too much beer, my body is not happy about it at all) several times lately.  But apparently have not learned it yet :(

Anyway while feeling *VERY* sick this morning I was trying to think of a good morning after song (I already posted "Hangover Tavern" on 22-July-2012) and this came to mind.  I always loved the verse about:

Nothin' to show but this brand new tattoo
It's a real beauty, a Mexican cutie
How it got here I haven't a clue

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue2-ZVxpVjc

I just remembered we got one of our most famous cats ever from Pam.  It's name was Ulysses, but everyone, including Pam, called it "Useless".

"When Doves Cry" by Prince

I also heard a Prince song on Oldies 94.1 yesterday and that just seemed so strange.  There are some artists I just never expected to hear on the oldies station...  like anybody from the 80's.  Just think how weird it's going to be when 90's artists are on the Oldies stations.

Apparently, Prince's record company is very diligent about the whole copyright thing, so I couldn't find anything on YouTube for this song.

Another song from the "Remember How Great...?  Volume 2" record (see Tuesday's post).  I remember this was one of my favorite childhood songs.

"It's a Beautiful Day" by The New Seekers

I was driving to the Utah Pride Center one morning a few weeks ago.  I was feeling great and thinking what a beautiful place the world is.  I was playing one of my old "favorites" cassette tapes (see my post from  1-March-2013) and this song came on and it was so perfect for how I was feeling that morning.  The big problem is: I can't remember the artist and I'm not sure if this is even the title.

Update 14-August-2015: I was in Randy's Records the other night and it occurred to me to ask if they could help identify it.  I pulled up the video on YouTube and person at the counter used his cell phone and an app called Shazam to identify it.  As I said in the original post I had a vague recollection that it was a B-side.  I also thought it was a possibility that The Seekers could be the artist.  I was really close, it was the B-side to "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma". :)

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_3YKrM_I9U
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9uHUwYrJNs

Update 13-December-2014: I have recorded a video of playing the song from the cassette and put it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6eeHSSeR7Y to see if anyone can identify it.

I have done Google searches and searched on "lyric" websites to no avail.  I have asked several people if they could identify it and no one recognized it.  I had a vague recollection of it being the B-side to a hit like "I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing", but as far as I can tell, it wasn't from that single.  I thought perhaps it was The Cowsills, but I haven't found it if it is.

Bonus video: while searching for this song on YouTube I came across this banned commercial for the 1970 Dodge Charger, that was fun to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSHo3j72fIo

"The Wayward Wind" by Gogi Grant

I was reading the back of Andy Williams' "Million Sellers" album and discovered that Friday's song was originally a million seller for Gogi Grant.  I don't remember ever hearing that version, but it reminded me of this hit that is one of my favorites.

"Happy" by Pharrell Williams

I kept hearing this song on the radio last summer, but I couldn't catch the artist.   Then my daughter was playing the "Despicable Me" soundtrack one day and I was like "that's it, that's the song!".  I was so excited and HAPPY!!

I hope your birthday is very "happy" today, Wendy Jean!!!!  Thank you for everything, your help and all the things you do that make me "happy". You have helped me more than you can know.  I know I can always depend on you and your support.  It has been a wonderful 33 years!!

"Suddenly There's a Valley" by Andy Williams

I was playing the "Million Sellers" album and was reminded what a great song this is.  This year has been a very bumpy ride and many times I've felt happier than I've ever felt before, but there has been some stressful periods where I felt so tired I wasn't sure there was "a bright tomorrow".  I just have to remember that valley is there.

"The Bilbao Song" by Andy Williams

Played the "Andy Williams' Best" album this morning and was reminded how many songs I liked from his early days on Cadence records.  This was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXeOjyKZRqU

I have three copies of this album, it is interesting to note how, in the days when they sold both mono and stereo albums, they made one cover and moved it up or down vertically to create the mono and stereo covers:

"Tarkus" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

I couldn't remember if I liked this album enough to keep the record in the rack (as opposed to the storage boxes), so I put it on turntable to give it a listen.  I remember now it is a great album.

Note: side one is all one song with these parts:

Eruption
Stones of Years
Iconoclast
Mass
Manticore
Battlefield
Aquatarkus

"Rock On" by David Essex

I posted this song 3 years ago (1-Sep-2011) and then changed my mind and changed it to a different song for that day.  But this morning when I heard the news about the Supreme Court decision, my first reaction was "ROCK ON!", so I decided to post it today to commemorate the decision.

"Sleep Keeps Me Awake" by Michelle Shocked

Even though my insomnia is the other kind I can still really relate to this song :)

Once again a song I can't find on YouTube, but I did find something that is extremely disappointing: apparently she did a anti-gay rant a couple of years ago:

I don't know if I will ever be able to listen to her music again and that breaks my heart.

I love this love this project: http://godlovesgaypeople.com/ and their video.  I can't wait for them to put one up in Utah:

"They Up and Died" by Stark and McBrien

Recently re-discovered this wonderful song that I had completely forgotten.

I've decided that one of the reasons I can't keep up with blog is how long it takes to find and link to the songs on YouTube or whatever.  Since having the list is more important than the links, I'm not always going to put a link.

Also I notice that YouTube is much more fluid than one could hope and many of the links in my blog are now dead.  It would be impossible at this point to go back and try to fix them.

I tried to find this song on YouTube but it didn't turn up on my first search, so sorry but there is no link to someplace you can hear it.

"Blue Water Line" by The Brothers Four

This song is so fun.  "If you can't afford a quarter, then you oughta give a dime" ... "Just 20,000 quarters and just 40,000 dimes and we'll ride again to glory on the ol' Blue Water Line".  Sounds like a bargain to me!

Speaking of small change, I found an old coupon inside a record jacket the other day:

Wow!  "Valuable Coupon" for a nickel!  I love the punch card holes in it too.

"The Sensual World" by Kate Bush

This is an interesting story behind this song, you can read more about that here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sensual_World_%28song%29

Having listened to the version that was released in 1989 all these (25) years, the "Directors Cut" version as she had originally envisioned it (retitled "Flower of the Mountain") sounds weird to me.

That is one thing I love about Kate Bush, she comes up with such fascinating topics for her songs.  And this has to be one of the coolest videos ever.  I love the 12" version, the violin is heavenly.  Sorry to all the neighbors in Kaysville I annoyed blasting in on the stereo.

"Babooshka" by Kate Bush

I realized this morning that this would be a great April Fool's song.

I'm always surprised when I think of a song that was epic for me and then find that I haven't already posted it.  In this case it is worse than that.  It's an artist that was epic for me and I've only posted two of her songs to date (on 30-Nov-2011 and 16-Sep-2012).  That's just crazy!!  I have to correct that omission.

"Love Can Make You Happy " by Mercy

Note: I'm (Rachel) finishing this post over 4 years in the future.

As of February 2014 I was still in the process of figuring out who I was.  But I had started loving myself for the first time in the process.  When I saw myself in the mirror as a woman, was the first time in my life I loved myself and loved who I saw looking back at me in the mirror.

So love can make you happy!  I have found so much happiness since I've become Rachel!!

"Glendora" by Perry Como

Trying to make a track listing of this old reel-to-reel tape

I'm writing this post (as Rachel) 6 years in the future.  I dug out that cassette a few days ago and I made a track listing for it.  I decided to post some of the songs here in my old (before I came out as transgender) blog, to work towards filling it in.

#TransIsBeautiful

As I talked about in yesterday's post I was making a track listing for both an old cassette tape (the date on it was 29-December-1978) and a reel-to-reel tape.  This is one of the songs I found on the reel-to-reel tape.

"Dream On Little Dreamer" by Perry Como

I apparently forgot to remove the no-record tab from that cassette
I'm writing this post (as Rachel) 6 years in the future.  I dug out that cassette a few days ago and I made a track listing for it.  I decided to post some of the songs here in my old (before I came out as transgender) blog, to work towards filling it in.

#TransIsBeautiful

I just realized something weird (or as I always say "It's all MAGIC!").  In the same week I was making a track listing for both this cassette and an old reel-to-reel tape.  I there were several songs recorded from the radio on the reel-to-reel tape and many of them were from 1965 and a couple that were older.  I'm fairly certain that tape was recorded in 1965.  I just noticed that this song came out in 1965.

"Trust Yourself" by Blue Rodeo

I first heard this song in a funny way, I was in an airplane flying home, somewhere over the Midwest.  I had my Walkman with me and normally listened to cassettes on it.  For some reason I was messing around with the built-in radio and picked up a station that was playing this song.  I really liked it and was worried that I would be out of range before I could find out what it was.  But fortunately, they announced the artist and title just before I lost the signal.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xE8d-SIIDK4

What made me think of this song was that I was thinking this morning how one of the evil things about MS is that it makes one not be able to trust themselves.

For sometime I have thought how I can't trust my hands, I will think I am carrying something in my hand (glasses, keys, gloves, etc.) and when I go to use whatever it is discover my hand is empty.  And the inverse is true as well: I can pick up something, and later discover that I have stuff in my hand that I had no idea I was carrying.  For example, I thought I pulled an audio cable out of a box and discover I was also carrying an extension cord and headphones.

My memory has been flaky for sometime, but has gotten extremely so lately.  I can't remember things for even a few seconds.  If I think of two things at once, by the time I get a pencil and paper to write them down I almost never remember them both, sometimes I can't remember either.
