"Sweet Young Thing" by The Monkees

That was sad news for Leap Day, the passing of Davy Jones.  May he rest in peace.  I know it is very weird to have this song be a favorite, but the Monkees were a part of my teenage period where the music becomes part of you.

"Nick of Time" by Bonnie Raitt

This is such a great song and very true.  "Life gets mighty precious when there is less of it to waste."

"I Am The Walrus" by The Beatles

I was thinking that it is kind of funny that the Beatles album that I have listened to more than any other is Sgt. Peppers and yet both the songs I've posted here, so far, came from "Magical Mystery Tour".  In any case this is a very cool song.  I love the little sample of this song in one of my other favorite songs, Chicago's "South California Purples".

Note - I updated three more entries that were placeholders back in December:

December 26th: "South California Purples" by Chicago
December 27th: "Listen" by Chicago
December 28th: "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" by Chicago

"I Don't Sleep, I Dream" by R.E.M.

I had to play this song many times on my iPod today.  This is definitely one of my favorite R.E.M. songs.

"I'll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need."

"The Secret of Life" by Gretchen Peters

Photo of me from 4-April-2018

Rachel Update 28-Apr-2019:  added photo above and link to studio version.  Along with the comment for me that the secret to life for me was to embrace who I truly was (a girl/ woman).  I had NO IDEA it was possible to be as happy as I've been in the last 4 years living as a woman.

Original Post:

Okay, I changed my mind.  I decided there was one more track from the Radio Free Music CD (see Sunday's blog entry) that I had to include among my favorites.  It is pretty amazing that I found one CD for $1.99 which had seven songs that I include among my favorites!  That was one hell of a bargain!  Oh, and the video with Janis Ian is very cool!!

"Genius" by Julia Fordham

I guess this will be my last post from the Radio Free Music CD (see Sunday's blog entry).  This video is a live version and it was fun to hear what she had to say at the beginning.

"Just To See You" by Lowen and Navarro

Yet another song from the Radio Free Music CD (see Sunday's blog entry).  This would have been a good song to include in the love songs I posted earlier this month.

"Miss You Fever" by Delbert McClinton

I'm not doing very well finding the songs from the RFM CD (see Sunday's blog entry).  I can't find this song on YouTube either.  Weird because there are dozens of other songs by Delbert McClinton AND there are cover versions of "Miss You Fever".  For now I'm just posting a couple of the cover versions and another Delbert McClinton song.

"Days On End" by Darden Smith

I was afraid this was going to happen with some of these songs on the RFM CD (see Yesterday's blog entry), I cannot find "Days On End" on YouTube.  There are several other songs by Darden Smith that are pretty good.  So until I can find that song I put links to a couple of other songs by him.

"Sooner or Later" by World Party

Several years ago I was in McFrugal's and they had a bin of cut out CDs and there was one called RFM - Radio Free Music (Volume 1) for $1.99.  (This was when CDs were still fairly expensive.)  It had a bunch of music on it that had been ignored by radio.  It turned out to have many great songs on it and several that became favorites.  I've decided to post several of them in the next few days, this being the first.

Note: the URL on the RFM CDs was www.intersoundmusic.com/rfm but that is dead now.

"Haunting" by Carly Simon

Since I did a haunting song yesterday, I thought I would follow it up with another one today.  I don't think this was ever a hit, but it has been a favorite of mine since the "Boys in the Trees" album came out in 1978.  "There's always someone haunting someone."

"You Haunt My Heart" by Promised Land

To me this Promised Land album is one of the great undiscovered albums.  It is so unknown that I could only find two tracks from it on YouTube.  There is no sign of "You Haunt My Heart".  I will attempt to find it someplace when I have time.

"Work For Love" by Ministry

Hmm, I guess I had more love songs on my favorites list than I realized.  Just thought of a couple more.  This is one is from the early Ministry album, that I understand Ministry now disclaims.  I thought it was a great album.

"Obsession" by Army of Lovers

I think this may have been another song that I discovered when I was in Germany, now I can't remember.  Anyway, it's a great song.  Very bizarre video though.

"Like A Snake" by Peacock Palace

I heard this song on MTV when I was Germany and have loved it ever since.  It is about the four seasons of love and I just love the description of Spring: "Spring grew madness, foolish plans, and craziness".  If that doesn't describe some love affairs I don't know what does.

Note: one of the official videos has a bit of the beginning and end cut off, the other one the audio is pretty bad.

"New Lines on Love" by Sniff 'n' the Tears

I just love the lyrics to this song.

As I fumble in my pocket
For another cigarette
A stall for inspiration
But my matches were all wet

My heart cried out for comfort
A little sympathy
Someone came and turned out the lights
And gave to me...  new lines on love

"Pretty World" by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66

I guess I have a weakness for Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, there are several love songs by them that I always loved.  This is another one.

"Someone Like You" by Van Morrison

This has been a favorite ever since I bought the "Poetic Champions Compose" album back in the late 80's.

"Burning House of Love" by X

Yet another song I rediscovered on KCQN Utah.  I just love this song, it is now my favorite X song.

We have a problem, Houston.  The version of this song we play on KCQN is significantly different than the version I've found on YouTube.  I like the version we have on KCQN much better.  I will do more searching and see if I can find out what the deal is as soon as I have time.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5vjpHfI8s8

Disclaimer: I haven't mentioned this recently, but I help with technical details and other stuff for KCQN Utah.  I also do a show called "The Obscurity File" on Sunday nights at 9:00 P.M. Mountain Time.

"Beautiful" by Gordon Lightfoot

We went to the IAMA (Intermountain Acoustic Music Association) Local Concert Series tonight and had a great time.  I was trying to think of an acoustic song that was on my favorites list.  Gordon Lightfoot popped into my head, because several of his songs are on my list.   Then it occurred to me that I could kill two birds with one stone because this is one of the best love songs ever, it gets me watery eyed.  It is dedicated to my wonderful wife.

"Because we've been friends, through rain or shine, for such a long, long time."

"Medicine Show" by Big Audio Dynamite

I was thinking perhaps I would start posting some love songs in preparation for Valentines Day.  But then this song played this morning on KCQN Utah and, well, the love songs will have to wait.  This is my favorite B.A.D. song, the lyrics still make me laugh: "If you ain't ill, it'll fix your car".  The video is pretty fun too.

Duck you suckers!

"Tokyo" by Thompson Twins

Yesterday's song reminded me of another Thompson Twins' song I love, so it's a Thompson Twins "Twin Spin".

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fflpFN0WZQ

NOTE: I went back today and replaced all of the placeholder (empty) posts from December 12 to December 17, 2011 with some of my favorite Chicago songs:

Introduction
25 or 6 to 4
Mother
A Hit by Varese
Something in This City Changes People
Old Days

I also changed my pick for September 1, 2011 to "Falling to Pieces" by Faith No More because it was my "Theme Song" for most of the 90's:

Falling to Pieces
