"Tyranny" by Stabilizers

Finish up March with a Twin-Spin by the Stabilizers.  This is another great song from what I believe is their only album.  But it was a great album, I loved the entire album.

"Underground" by Stabilizers

Here's another great song that gives me the cool eerie feeling.  I don't know if eerie is quite the right word, but it's the closest one I can think of right now.

"In My Dreams" by Berlin

Rachel update 13-Mar-2017: WOW!  This is THE SONG!!!  This song literally changed my life.

Actually, it was not the song itself, it was just part of the strange sequence of events that led to my discovery of being a trans-woman.

About a month before I made this post, in February of 2012 I discovered a video for this song had taken down from YouTube and, in the process of trying to fix the link to said video, I was set on the path to becoming a woman.  So this could very well be the most significant song ever in my life!

I have found so much joy and happiness being and living as a woman.  You can read my posts about my life now in my follow on blog: https://rachels-vital-music.blogspot.com/

"Break Away" by The Beach Boys

Rachel update 5-Jul-2017: 3 out of 5 of the original links are now dead.  I'm adding some new links.

In listening to this song now, I can definitely relate to some of the lyrics:

Time will not wait for me
Time is my destiny
Why change the part of me
That has to be free
....
I can break away from that lonely life
And I can do what I wanna do
And break away from that empty life
When my world is new
...
And I can break away to a better life
Without the shackles that hold me down
I going to make a way for each happy day
As my life turns around

I had to let my female self break free and I broke away from my male shackles that held me down.  That definitely made a way for me to be far happier than I ever was before...

See yesterday's post for more background about this song.  This is another song from the reel-to-reel tape that we didn't know what it was or who did it for many years.  Then one day my brother Brad came in, pulled out one of my Beach Boys albums and there it was.  It remains one of my favorite Beach Boys songs to this day.

"That's All She Wrote" by Ricky Nelson

We had an old Reel-to-Reel tape with some songs recorded from the radio.  There were several songs that  we loved but could not identify, because they hadn't been big hits.  If I remember correctly the identification process was hampered by the fact that the tape had been recorded on a cheap portable recorder that did not use a capstan so the tape was not recorded at a precise speed and therefore did not playback at the correct speed and pitch.

Many years later in an effort to find out what this song was I copied it from the reel tape to a cassette and took it into Randy's Records and they were able to identify it as Rick Nelson.

And they had the 45 which I still have.  And I just checked and it is the same Decca 45 that is in the third video below.  The 45 shown in the second video below is a Brunswick which I haven't seen before.

"Garden of Allah" by Sammy Kaye and His Orchestra with Barry Frank

I remember blasting this song on the 8-Track player in my 1963 Pontiac Catalina (note: I did not have Tri-Power and it was an automatic, but it was still cool).  I love the horns in this song!

"You Got Lucky" by Tom Petty

The Petty Bitches - L to R: Erica, Kat, Talia, Hillary, Melahn

Rachel update 11-Apr-2018: the old link is dead, I've added new links and I've decided to add a glimpse into the future:

Tom Petty passed away on 2-Oct-2017.  My friends formed a Tom Petty tribute band called the Petty Bitches, shown in the photo above (see my post from 16-Dec-2017).

Last night they played again and I even joined them on stage singing backup vocals on a couple of songs.  It was scary but a lot of fun!!

Here are some functioning links for "You Got Lucky":

"How High the Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford

Oh how I love this song.  And it always reminds me of my grandfather who loved Les Paul and Mary Ford.  Yes, I still have his records.  I miss Les Paul, may he rest in peace.

"Big Log" by Robert Plant

Yes, it's another "P" song from the 80's.  I've decided to do a few more "P" songs because I'm only going to do a few "Q" songs.  This is one of my favorites from the glory days of MTV.

This song always reminds me of a family party we had where I played music from my old Sony cassette deck, it was one of the early models that the cassette loaded in the top.  The closest one I could find was this one: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/themes/recordplayers/sonyaccess.html.

"Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney

Over 50 years old, from the 1961 movie of the same name.  I also included a video with stills from the Mad Men TV Series.  I have not watched the entire Mad Men series, but the episodes I have seen were fascinating.  Like my friend Stefanie said: "They nailed it".

"Suburbia" by Pet Shop Boys

Hmm, I just realized, with one exception, all of the "P" songs I've posted so far have been from the 80's.  I need to mix it up a little more.  Anyway, I love this song.  And the video is pretty cool too.

"Appetite" by Prefab Sprout

I've decided to get back to doing the artists alphabetically, one letter a week.  I'm going to go back and put the O's in the first week of December because it is still placeholder, so I'm going to do P's this week starting with Prefab Sprout.  It's strange to think that I've loved this song fro 27 years.

"Through the Sky" by Swing Out Sister

I've been listening to Swing Out Sister's "Somewhere Deep in the Night" album on my iPod and really enjoying it.  So I have to post some more songs from it.  I love the music, the lyrics, and the video for this song.  It is so uplifting.

Everything's been said and done
What else is there to say?
When tomorrow's been and gone
And given into yesterday

If I'd known before the things that I know now
I'd be way above the ground
A thousand miles high
Spinning and spiraling through the sky

Waiting for the sun to shine
And brighten up my days
Drifting, floating in and out of time
You came and took my breath away

Now I'm climbing up above the highest cloud
And we're never coming down

A thousand miles high
Spinning and spiraling through the sky

"Sing, Sing, Sing" by Benny Goodman

My wife has been watching the Ken Burns Jazz series and I've been catching bits and pieces here and there.  We both highly recommend it.  It is just fascinating!  Anyway, I caught an episode the other day about Benny Goodman and decided I had to post this song. I really like the 9 minute video from the 78 RPM record.  But it was also fun to see the clip from the movie.  Also note the Live at Carnegie Hall is apparently cut off and was actually 12 minutes long.
